Personally, I really enjoy dissecting some of the cleverly designed advertisements, posters or webpages and using them as platforms to discuss and surface various viewpoints and beliefs that may be attributed to pop culture, traditions, history, politics, religion and values. Having an open , guided and justified discussion can help to shape youths’ broad understanding of our ever-evolving times and perhaps even demonstrate that two or more persons can have differing viewpoints but we can all engage in open discussions that do not need to involve abrasive language or shouting in order to get our points across.
Anyway, the following clip gives you a brief idea of what I like to do with my students when it comes to Visual Text. I give my students the airtime to ‘unpack’ [derive meaning from and verbalise] the literal or implied features they can pick out from the text. This interaction also inadvertently reinforces that they need to be on the ball during lesson as I will not offer answers unconditionally.
